PADI TEC REC Instructor Training

There’s a moment in every diver’s journey when you find yourself craving something more—a little deeper, a little longer, a little beyond the edge of the recreational limits. For me, that moment came after guiding divers and teaching Open Water through Instructor Development Courses as PADI Course Director.

That’s when I decided to become a PADI Tec Rec Instructor Trainer.

Why Tec Diving?

Technical diving is a fascinating and broad ranging subject. The precision, the planning, the gear, the mentality—it’s a different world altogether. Unlike recreational diving, where your limits are defined more by gas supply and no-decompression limits, tec diving lets you go beyond those boundaries, provided you’re willing to pay attention to detail and embrace the discipline it demands.

Becoming a PADI Tec Rec Instructor Trainer was my way of pushing those limits even further—not just for myself, but to help others do the same, safely and confidently.

The Training: Precision, Planning, and Pressure (In a Good Way)

The PADI Tec Rec Instructor Course is demanding and progressive, both mentally and physically. It covers the full Tec 40, 45, and 50 curriculum levels, so you're not just learning how to teach—you’re deepening your own skills and mindset along the way.

Expect fun and progressive days filled with:

  • In-depth theory sessions: Decompression algorithms, gas planning, emergency procedures, and equipment configurations.

  • Dry runs and skill circuits: Practicing lift bag deployments, valve drills, stage handling, and shutdown procedures on land before ever hitting the water.

  • Confined and open water scenarios: These are the real tests.  You will face realistic scenarios and problems to see how you handle them and how you teach others to do the same.

It is solid and progressive training – you will emerge out of out of every dive more confident and more capable.

The Gear Game

Tec diving gear is a universe of its own. Twinsets, stage bottles, long hoses, backup masks, redundant systems. You have to know your equipment intimately. During the course you will refine your standardised setup into something that is both comfortable and efficient.

What you will learn (Besides the Tech Stuff)

Becoming a PADI Tec Rec Instructor isn’t just about knowing how to teach gas switches or handle simulated failures. It’s about leadership in an environment where mistakes are unforgiving. It’s about building a mindset of safety, calm, and clarity in the safety and service of others. It’s about humility—because the ocean doesn’t care how many certs you have if you’re not focused and prepared.

The Payoff

When you ultimately earn that PADI Tec Rec Instructor certification, it will feel uniquely different to any other dive credential that you have received. It isn’t just a badge—it’s a responsibility.
